God is our creator. He made everything and sustains everything.
It’s well-known that time is part of creation. So when we say that God created everything we’re saying created time too. That means he is outside of time, existing in his own eternal, timeless, changeless moment. It makes no sense to ask, “Where did God come from?” because he just is.
Trinity
There is only one God. And yet he exists in 3 persons. The Bible calls these three persons the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each is fully God, and there is only one God. It’s a profound mystery. Many have tried to find analogies to help explain the nature of the Trinity but there isn’t one. God is simply too complex for human minds to comprehend.
What is God like?
God is good. Because he is our creator and the origin of everything, he has the right and might to define what good is. He is goodness. We would rather choose for ourselves what counts as good or bad, but God is goodness and he doesn’t change.
God is wise. This is good to know. So much happens in the world that we can’t make sense of. It’s important to know that our creator knows and governs with wisdom. Just because we don’t understand everything doesn’t mean God is not acting with wisdom.
God is love. He exists in perfect love. Since love is an act, there is love both between the three persons of the trinity and love from God to his creation. He loves you. Even if you deny him, offend him, or ignore him, he loves you.
God is holy. He is completely unlike you or me. He exists in his own dazzling brilliance and purity. This is so true that if you were to approach him you would be consumed, like a space ship trying to fly to the sun.
God is justice. For you and me, this is a problem. When we’re a victim of something, it’s good to know that God will hold people to account. But that means he’ll hold you and me to account too. And because we’ve all done wrong, we all fall short of heaven’s standards. No-one deserves heaven.
That’s where Jesus comes in.
